Whether you're renovating your home and able to start
with a clean slate, or updating an existing room, start
with a plan. These simple steps will help to bring all
the décor elements, together from the floor up, in order to
define and create your own personal style.
 |
For
inspiration, purchase several decorating magazines. Magazine
types range from bed and bath to kitchens to general decorating
trends. These will begin to give you a feel for the décor
style you most prefer: Classic,
or Casual/Country,
or Contemporary.
|
 |
Cut out all of the pictures of appealing ideas:
flooring, fabrics and colours, hard and soft furnishings,
wall and window treatments, accessories, lamps, pillows,
pottery and even picture arrangements.
|
 |
Collect all of your clippings
and place them in a
manila envelope or scrapbook. Then start adding paint
chips, wallpaper samples, and fabric swatches.
Your existing style of furnishing and accessories will
set the stage for a distinctive decorating style. To help
you coordinate your décor, identify and take pictures
of existing room elements
that you cannot or will not part with and add them to
your decorating portfolio. |
 |
|

|
 |
Start to pull your room decorating choices together on
a sample board. Use foam
core for the board and push pins to allow for easy changes.
This way you can start to visualize your ideas and add
and subtract as you like. Look at colours in daylight
and in lamplight to see the full effect.
|
 |
To coordinate with existing pieces of furniture that you
cannot change, add samples
of items in your room, or a predominant fabric. If you
don't have a fabric swatch, try to match one from a magazine
and cut it out for your board. |
|
Move things around and try
mixing different colours
and textures until you are happy with the results. (Interior
designers use this method with clients to experiment with
possible colour, texture, pattern and style combinations.)
|
|
Relax! Have fun! With
the tools and inspiration to decorate from the heart,
you add your own personal touch and create something
beyond the ordinary
a room that comes
alive
a home with a soul.
